The overall purpose of this program is to help establish or expand co-operative education programs in First Nations schools on-reserve, federal schools, and in schools administered under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and the Northeastern Quebec Agreement. The program creates school-based work/study opportunities that provide meaningful work experience in a supportive environment.

L'objectif global de ce programme est d'aider à établir ou à élargir des programmes d'alternance études-travail (communément appelés programmes coop) dans les écoles des réserves, les écoles fédérales et les écoles administrées en vertu de la Convention de la Baie James et du Nord québécois et de la Convention du Nord-Est québécois. Le programme permet d'offrir des stages d'apprentissage en milieu de travail qui apportent aux participants une expérience de travail valable dans un environnement accueillant.

En 2012, Affaires autochtones et Développement du Nord Canada et le Bureau de la traduction ont recommandé les deux majuscules initiales au terme «Première Nation». Dans les appellations officielles, ce terme peut être orthographié différemment. Il faut alors respecter la graphie utilisée même si elle n'est pas conforme à cette recommandation.
