Chatterton's compound. A composition used for insulating submarine telegraph cables. This compound (which is perhaps somewhat erroneously known as "Chatterton's compound") is usually composed of gutta percha 3 parts, resin 1 part and Stockholm tar 1 part.

As per source TLFRA, "chatterton" is an obsolete term in English now replaced by the term "insulating tape."

[...] cette technique s'est révélée très défaillante s'agissant de l'isolation, le chatterton vieillissant mal [...] En dépit des progrès faits dans le domaine du ruban adhésif (aujourd'hui en matière plastique), les épissures sont désormais proscrites des installations.

Chatterton [...] supplanté en anglais par l'appellation populaire «insulating tape».
