Le substantif maximum devient normalement maximums au pluriel; le pluriel maxima est cependant toléré. On doit éviter d'employer maximum adjectivement; l'emploi de l'adjectif maximal est alors de mise selon l'Académie des Sciences.

Les termes qui désignent cette notion peuvent aussi servir à désigner le moment ou l'endroit où on relève un maximum. Employé par rapport à l'ensemble de l'atmosphère, le terme maximum d'ozone désigne parfois la couche d'ozone, l'ozonosphère, là où les concentrations d'ozone sont maximales, à environ vingt-cinq kilomètres d'altitude.
