Il y a parfois lieu de distinguer entre «entraîneur», «instructeur» et «moniteur». En sports d'équipe, l'entraîneur dirige derrière le banc, choisit l'alignement, oriente le jeu, alors que l'instructeur (par exemple, l'instructeur des gardiens de but) est chargé de périodes d'entraînement, particulièrement de la formation technique et de l'enseignement de jeux et de méthodes pour améliorer les performances. En sports individuels, l'entraîneur d'un athlète cumule les deux fonctions. Not to be confused with "ATP/WTA trainer", "personal trainer", "coach", "pro", or "hitting partner". A professional tennis player may have both a coach (e.g. Nick Bolletieri), a physical trainer to help reinforce physical conditioning and a personal trainer to help him in all other aspects that will help the player win tournaments and prize money.
