Abnormal environments increase the number of mutations above the normal background level. While such mutations increase genetic diversity, most are known by geneticists to have a negative effect on the organism (i.e.they are inadaptive), as they disturb the genetic balance resulting from thousands of years of selection.

Ces milieux anormaux provoquent une augmentation de la fréquence des mutations, ce qui entraîne une augmentation de la diversité génétique. Cependant, selon les généticiens, la plupart de ces mutations anormales n'ont aucune valeur adaptative et ont même un effet négatif sur les organismes, car elles perturbent l'équilibre génétique résultant de milliers d'années de sélection naturelle.
