Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics

Stability index to determine the occurrence of severe weather ...

Lifted index ... is defined by LI = T5 - LTs (°C), where T5 is the dry-bulb temperature at 500 hPa and LTs, the temperature of a surface parcel lifted adiabatically to 500 hPa. Stable conditions are indicated by LI > 3, very unstable conditions by LI < -2.
