Cet «illipsoïde des indices» (E) [...] possède trois axes rectangulaires : 1. L'un correspondant à la direction du plus grand indice («ng»). 2. L'autre correspondant à la direction du plus petit indice («np»). 3. Le troisième normal aux deux précédents et correspondant à un indice moyen («nm»), qui n'est d'ailleurs pas la moyenne arithmétique des deux indices extrêmes. Ces trois indices sont dits «indices principaux» du milieu anisotrope considéré.
