Le volant est constitué d'une masse tournante parfaitement équilibrée, et présentant un moment d'inertie important par rapport à son axe de rotation. Il sert à réguler la vitesse de rotation d'un arbre utilisé dans une transmission de mouvement, et sur lequel il est fixé.
