L'hypothèse selon laquelle presque tout le Canada aurait été couvert de glaciers au pléistocène est aujourd'hui rejetée. Il est intéressant de noter, du point de vue historique, que les biologistes ont découvert les concentrations d'espèces endémiques canadiennes avant que l'existence de certains refuges glaciaires ne soit admise par les géologues.
