La [terapia génica humana] se puede llevar a cabo en células somáticas (terapia génica somática) o en células de la línea germinal (espermatozoides, óvulos o las células que las originan) en cuyo caso se denomina terapia génica germinal. Es evidente que las alteraciones genéticas producidas en las células somáticas no se transmiten a la descendencia mientras que las modificaciones de las células germinales pueden transmitirse a las generaciones posteriores.
