Histoire : Le territoire, exploré en 1603, fut concédé par Charles 1er à Georges Calvert (1632). Son fils Cecilius, 2e lord Baltimore et catholique, la colonisa. Après des luttes entre catholiques et puritains, la colonie, devenue anglicane, fut réunie à la Couronne (1680). Prospère de par sa situation maritime, le Maryland se déclara indépendant dès 1776, adopta la Constitution en 1788.
