Atomic structure and properties ... A more meaningful definition of "atom" can be made in terms of the internal structure, which has been well understood at least since 1927. In these terms the atom is the unit of matter that contains a small, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by sufficient negative electrons to make the whole electrically neutral. Structure. All atoms are about the same size, and this fact is a clue to the nature of their structure. The atomic diameter is about 2 X 10[superscript] -8 cm (2 hundred-millionths of a centimeter).
