In fluorescent penetrant inspection a fluorescent liquid is applied to the surface of the workpiece and enters the surface discontinuities. The excess penetrant is removed before the piece is examined under intense ultraviolet light. Indications of discontinuities show up brilliantly.

Dans cette forme de l'essai [de ressuage], on accroît au maximum le contraste des ressuages avec le fond sur lequel ils apparaissent en ayant recours à un liquide d'imprégnation fluorescent. En lumière noire de Wood (lampes de 75 à 125 W), on arrive ainsi à voir les ressuages plus tôt et notamment, dans le cas des fissures les plus fines, avant que se produise, par étalement à la surface extérieure, un estompage excessif du spectre: d'où une augmentation de la sensibilité.
