Le F-117A, premier appareil furtif de l’US Air Force, a été conçu pour les missions de reconnaissance et d’attaque de précision dans des espaces aériens ennemis très fortement défendus. C’est un appareil monoplace très difficile à manœuvrer.

OBS

Pour qu'un avion ou un missile soit « stealth », c'est-à-dire « furtif » ou « discret » (et non pas « invisible », comme on le dit trop souvent par abus de langage), il faut, d'une part, qu'il ait une forme appropriée et, d'autre part, que son revêtement soit capable d'absorber les ondes radar.
