The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights approved the American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in February, 1997. Drafted by the member states of the Organization of American States, the Declaration acknowledges the distinctive character of indigenous peoples, and established specific guidelines for the protection and empowerment of Aboriginals in all countries of the Hemisphere.
