On distingue les enrobés ouverts, dans lesquels la grosseur des gravillons est à peu près uniforme, qui présentent un certain pourcentage de vides après leur mise en place, et les enrobés denses, comportant des gravillons et des sables, ce qui donne par conséquent une texture plus serrée, très désirable; ils sont plus coûteux que les enrobés ouverts, car les sables sont également enrobés de bitume d'où une fabrication plus complexe.
