Les imprimantes à papier métallisé sont très proches des imprimantes thermiques. Le papier est recouvert d'un film métallique très fin et chaque point de la matrice est obtenu grâce à un petit arc électrique qui noircit un endroit déterminé. La tête d'impression balaye le papier et, à l'instant de son passage sur un point à noircir, l'électrode correspondante est portée à un potentiel élevé par rapport à celui du papier, ce qui produit l'arc électrique.
