Le résultat final de la désagrégation mécanique est de transformer une roche cohérente en fragments meubles (matériel clastique ou détritique). Celui-ci est emporté par les agents d'érosion ou continue à se décomposer sur place très rapidement, car l'attaque chimique s'opère maintenant sur des surfaces considérablement accrues. De toute façon, on assiste à la disparition totale de la roche primitive.
