Areas of distinctive erosional formation in which deep, tortuous gullies are separated by saw-toothed divides.

CONT

Badlands develop in arid to semi-arid areas where the bedrock is poorly cemented and rainfall generally occurs in cloudbursts. The dry, granular surface material and light vegetation are swept from the slopes during showers, leaving the gullies bare.

Les bad-lands se développent seulement là où la couverture végétale est très clairsemée. Dans les conditions naturelles, ils caractérisent les régions désertiques et subdésertiques [...] où ils s'étendent sur des régions de roches meubles et imperméables, durcissant sous l'effet de la sécheresse (argiles, marnes, sables très argileux).

Le terme «bad-land» figure au singulier dans le Quillet encyclopédique. D'autre part, le Grand Larousse encyclopédique (source GRLAA) lui donne une forme masculine, alors que dans le Lexis et le Petit Robert le terme porte la mention «féminin».
