Aujourd'hui, les pays comme la Chine ne sont plus considérés comme des économies entièrement planifiées. On parle plutôt d'«économie socialiste de marché». C'est pourquoi le statut de la Chine est source de controverse dans le cadre de l'Accord Mexique-États-Unis-Canada (AMEUC), car on hésite à lui accorder le statut de pays à économie de marché étant donné que l'État y joue encore un rôle interventionniste.
