Un réseau de téléphonie mobile est un réseau téléphonique qui permet l'utilisation simultanée de millions de téléphones sans fil, immobiles ou en mouvement, y compris lors de déplacements à grande vitesse et sur une grande distance. Un réseau de téléphonie mobile a une structure «cellulaire» qui permet de réutiliser de nombreuses fois les mêmes fréquences (fréquences hertzienne).

Una red móvil generalmente se diseña en base a una "cuadrícula cellular" que cubre un área geográfica. Las estaciones base se colocan ya sea en el centro de cada celda o en el vértice de un grupo de celdas. La cantidad de estaciones base requeridas para un área dada dependerá del terreno y la cantidad de personas que utilicen teléfonos móviles.
