A sign of meningeal irritation which can be elicited in three ways. 1) When the patient sits up in bed, flexion of the legs occurs. 2) With the patient lying supine, lifting of the legs causes involuntary flexion of the knees. 3) An attempt to extend the flexed knee of the supine patient after the thigh has been flexed on the pelvis causes pain and spasm of the hamstring muscles. 2, record 1, English, - Kernig%27s%20sign

Signe témoignant d'une irritation méningée, mais pouvant survenir aussi lors d'une hernie discale ou de tumeurs de la queue de cheval. Il se recherche de diverses manières. 1) La mise en position assise provoque la flexion invincible des genoux. 2) Le malade étant couché, le soulèvement progressif des deux membres inférieurs maintenus en extension entraîne la flexion des genoux. 3) En position couchée, hanches et genoux fléchis à 90 degrés, l'extension des membres inférieurs dans l'axe des cuisses est impossible.
