Turbulence is said to be homogeneous when there is no spatial variation of the mean properties of the turbulent component of the motion, although the local properties may be directional, as, for example, when there is large, but uniform, shear in the mean motion.

Dans l'expérience de Reynolds, un ensemble de réalisations de l'écoulement pourrait être défini par un ensemble d'expériences conduites chaque jour sur la même installation. Dans le cas de l'atmosphère terrestre, on pourrait considérer comme une épreuve particulière l'écoulement atmosphérique observé sur une année donnée. Les moyennes d'ensemble que l'on peut ainsi obtenir, au moins en principe, sont en général celles qui ont la faveur du théoricien. Si ces moyennes sont invariantes dans le temps, on dira que la turbulence est stationnaire. Si elles sont invariantes par translation dans l'espace, on dira que la turbulence est homogène.
