Le «trillion» américain correspond au terme français «billion». Cependant, pour éviter toute ambiguïté, il convient d'utiliser une puissance de 10. Par exemple, on écrira «neuf parties par billion» comme suit : 9 p.p. 1012, ou 9 X 10-12, ou encore 9 p/1012. On aura compris que, dans l'expression «partie par 10[12]», le mot «partie» symbolise un volume, une masse ou un nombre de particules, suivant ce qui a été utilisé pour calculer la concentration (ou rapport); dans les expressions «x X 10[-12]», «x p.p. 10[12]» et «x/10[12]», la lettre minuscule «x» tient lieu ici du nombre de parties en cause.
