Certains stupéfiants, comme les analgésiques opiacés (morphine, opium, etc.), qui font partie de la catégorie des narcotiques, peuvent avoir un usage thérapeutique. Ils agissent contre la douleur, mais leur utilisation prolongée entraîne une dépendance physique et/ou psychique. Leur emploi est soumis à une législation sévèrement réglementée. Parmi les autres stupéfiants, couramment appelés drogues, on trouve des dérivés du chanvre indien (cannabis), de la cocaïne et de l'opium, auxquels s'ajoutent l'héroine et le LSD.
