Abasie vient du grec, et est formé du «a» privatif et de «basis», action de marcher. L'abasie est donc une extrême difficulté de la marche, voire l'impossibilité totale de marcher. Cependant, il faut distinguer l'abasie de la paralysie, en ce sens que, chez les sujets abasiques, il n'y a pas d'atonie (troubles du tonus) musculaire, ni d'absence de sensibilité ou de coordination musculaire.
