Les épaississeurs servent à régler la concentration en solides de la pulpe qui ira à la flottation ou alimentera les filtres à vide. Ces appareils utilisent le phénomène de la vitesse limite en eau calme. Ce sont des bassins cylindriques dans lesquels l'eau chargée arrive à la partie supérieure, au centre du bassin; elle se répartit radialement, et, pendant le temps de parcours pour atteindre la périphérie, les particules les plus grenues descendent, échappant à ce courant horizontal, et tombent au fond; c'est donc une eau moins chargée qui est évacuée par débordement. Les particules qui ont décanté se rassemblent sur le fond du bassin; le plus souvent, ce fond est à peine conique, parfois même plat, et les bras d'un râteau tournant très lentement homogénéisent le dépôt, qui est amené vers l'orifice de sortie.
