A substance, material or body having a conductivity of zero or, in practice, a very small conductivity and which is used to prevent or to reduce the passage of electricity.

OBS

Whenever an "insulating material" or "insulator" is used in an application where its dielectric characteristics play a prominent role, it is often called a "dielectric" (as in capacitors), but the terms should not be interchanged indiscriminately. Compare with that other record in TERMIUM.

Les isolants gazeux servent à diminuer les résistances d'isolement ou contribuent à l'extinction des arcs; ce sont toujours des gaz polyatomiques dont les principaux sont l'air, l'azote, l'hydrogène et l'hexafluorure de soufre.

Les isolants liquides ou huiles isolantes ont pour but d'accroître la rigidité diélectrique d'une isolation et aussi d'évacuer la chaleur produite par les pertes électriques et magnétiques dans les circuits environnants. Ces liquides sont soit des huiles minérales dérivées du pétrole, soit des huiles de synthèse ininflammables (askarels). On les emploie couramment dans les transformateurs, les inductances, les condensateurs, les câbles et les disjoncteurs.

Parmi les isolants solides on distingue les isolants minéraux (verre, quartz, céramique, mica, amiante) et les isolants organiques, naturels (cellulose, bitumes, caoutchoucs) ou synthétiques (polymères thermoplastiques ou thermodurcissables, composites divers, élastomères).
