Appraise means to assess an object, a situation or a person’s abilities or characteristics.

  • I have had my house appraised by two evaluators.
  • Suddenly surrounded by snarling dogs, the letter carrier appraised the situation quickly and took flight.
  • She appraised the employees carefully before choosing the team leader.

Apprise means to inform or make aware of.

  • All parties were fully apprised of the state of the negotiations.
