As a phrasal verb, check in is written as two separate words.

  • Clients often try to check in and then realize that they do not have their travel information.

For a noun or an adjective, the hyphenated spelling check-in is used.

  • The customer service representative asked for my identification at check-in. (noun)
  • Passengers were asked to proceed to the check-in area. (adjective)
