phosphorus, phosphorous

The noun phosphorus refers to the chemical element that glows in the dark and burns when in contact with oxygen.

  • This iron ore contains very little phosphorus.

The adjective phosphorous means “of, relating to or containing phosphorus.”

  • Since the chemical processes used to treat phosphorous iron ore cause pollution, they are being replaced with other methods.
