In today’s digital age, Canadians are concerned more than ever about privacy protection. Personal information is routinely collected, used, retained and disclosed in many sectors. Businesses and governments apply ever-evolving security safeguards in order to protect the privacy of all citizens.
The Personal Information and Privacy Glossary, originally published in November 2023, has been updated to include new concepts related to privacy protection, particularly in the areas of law and privacy enhancing technologies. In this new edition, which contains 375 concepts, nearly 200 entries have been added or revised. This valuable terminological resource is the result of close collaboration between Public Services and Procurement Canada’s Translation Bureau and Access to Information and Privacy Directorate, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.

There are two types of ATIP requests: access to information requests and personal information requests.
Although the acronym "ATIP" generally refers to "access to information and privacy," in the term "ATIP request," it means "access to information or personal information."
Although the term "access to information and privacy request" is sometimes used within the federal public service, its use is not recommended. Requests concerning personal information are called "personal information requests," not "privacy requests."

A privacy complaint is classified as a "well-founded complaint" when the investigation by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada finds that an organization contravened a provision of the Privacy Act or Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
