Poling of optical fibres and the like. A method of inducing a permanent electric field in a dielectric material is disclosed, generally known as "poling" of the material. Two electrodes are used for poling the material, and potentials of the same polarity compared to a surrounding ground potential are applied to the electrodes in order to effect the poling. Preferably, the applied potentials are of substantially equal magnitude. 2, fiche 3, Anglais, - poling

Phenomenon which arises as a result of the build-up of a layer of rejected solute at the membrane surface which impedes solvent flow. The resistance to flow due to this layer thus increases until a point is reached where the rate of diffusion of solute away from the polarization layer equals the rate of deposition. This phenomenon also explains why the solvent flux often becomes invariant with an increasing transmembrane pressure drop. Although solvent flux through a membrane is a hydraulic pressure-activated process and should increase with increasing pressure, a point is reached where the rate of build-up of the solute polarization layer is such that flow is impeded and further increases in pressure have no effect. 2, fiche 5, Anglais, - concentration%20polarization

Concentration is the only important application with regard to initial enzyme recovery. Coarse fractionation is rarely attempted on a large scale, mainly because concentration polarisation ... occurs during ultra-filtration, effectively preventing an adequate separation. Equally, removal of salts and low molecular weight species alone is not the prime consideration, although ultrafiltration is commonly used to this end later in enzyme purification processes. 4, fiche 5, Anglais, - concentration%20polarization

Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized (H) or vertically polarized (V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy. 4, fiche 6, Anglais, - polarization
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations. With this configuration, four linearly polarized signals are measured coherently in the scattering matrix: HH, HV, VH, and VV. Consequently, the user can derive additional information about the target to aid in the analysis. 5, fiche 6, Anglais, - polarization

Record number: 6, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 3 CONT
