The rice blast disease is caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea, which, in its sexual state, is known as Magnaporthe grisea. The disease can strike all aerial parts of the plant. Most infections occur on the leaves, causing diamond-shaped lesions with a gray or white center to appear, or on the panicles, which turn white and die before being filled with grain. P. grisea is highly specific to rice, although certain strains that don’t attack rice can harm weeds in the rice field. Once on a rice plant, the fungus rapidly produces thousands of spores, which are carried readily through the air, by wind or rain, onto neighboring plants.

Parent material, in soil science, means the underlying geological material (generally bedrock or a superficial or drift deposit) in which soil horizons form. Soils typically get a great deal of structure and minerals from their parent material. Parent materials are made up of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering. ... Parent material is classified by its last means of transport. So material that was transported to a location by glacier, then deposited elsewhere by streams, that material is classified as stream transported parent material, or fluvial parent material. Glacial till refers to material dragged with a moving ice sheet. Because it is not transported with liquid water, the material is not sorted by size.

Pour décrire un sol, il faut d'abord en faire apparaître une coupe verticale - le profil [...] Les différences de couleur, de structure et de composition permettent de distinguer plusieurs couches principales, appelées horizons et désignées par des lettres majuscules, de haut en bas : A, B, C et R. «A» désigne l'horizon de surface foncé qui contient l'humus. Au-dessous de A se trouve un horizon B, essentiellement minéral, résultant de la transformation du matériau d'origine. Des minéraux ont été détruits; d'autres ont été créés. C'est le cas de certaines argiles et des hydroxydes de fer qui donnent à cet horizon une couleur brun-ocre. La surface du sol est souvent appauvrie en éléments fins, en fer et en calcium sous l'effet de l'infiltration des eaux de pluie, phénomène connu sous le nom de lessivage. «B», dit «horizon d'accumulation», reçoit les éléments lessivés de A. Il existe des sols sans horizon B. Enfin, «C» désigne le «matériau d'origine» à partir duquel se forme le sol et «R» la roche brute sous-jacente. Les horizons se laissent parfois diviser en sous-couches.

Un sol est formé d'une fraction minérale issue des roches du sous-sol, d'humus et d'une multitude d'êtres vivants. Il provient le plus souvent de la dégradation de roches originelles dites matériau parental. Celles-ci subissent peu à peu et selon les conditions climatiques et biologiques des transformations plus ou moins profondes qui aboutissent à une couche de sol plus ou moins épaisse aux caractéristiques particulières.

Note that if were making a geologic map, we could draw a line on the map that separates the pelitic rocks containing only Pyrophyllite from those containing Kyanite + Quartz. Such a line(a surface in 3 dimensions) is called an isograd(iso-same, grad-grade). In this case, since it represents the first appearance of Kyanite, we call it the Kyanite Isograd... If we continue walking along the direction that T & P increased in these rocks during metamorphism, we would eventually come to another place where in the pelitic rocks the mineral assemblage changes. This time the change is from Kyanite + Quartz to Sillimanite + Quartz. Again, we can draw a line on the map that indicates this change in mineral assemblage, this time calling it the Sillimanite Isograd. Just like before, this represents the point on the phase diagram, above, where the geothermal gradient intersected the boundary for the reaction... Because the sandstone and the limestone do not contain Kyanite, the isograd does not appear in these rocks, but we can still extrapolate its position across the map or outcrop.

Ocean-floor metamorphism is a type of metamorphism of regional or local extent related to the steep geothermal gradient occurring near spreading centres in oceanic environments. The recrystallisation, which is mostly incomplete, encompasses a wide range of temperatures. The metamorphism is associated with circulating hot aqueous fluids (with related metasomatism) and typically shows an increasing temperature of metamorphism with depth.

A mathematical expression which defines the physical state of a homogeneous substance (gas, liquid, or solid) by relating volume to pressure and absolute temperature for a given mass of the material.

CONT

The gas state equation is hidden in many common everyday thermodynamic observations, like for instance in the weather forecast. It is used to calculate certain properties of gases, namely : Temperature(T), pressure(p) and volume(V). These properties together are called the state of a gas. The most common form of the gas equation is the equation for an ideal gas [that] is a gas consisting of point-like particles which do not interact with each other(ie, they do not stick together or repel each other).

OBS

A large number of such equations have been devised to apply equally to gaseous and liquid phases throughout a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Of these, the simplest is Van der Waal’s equation. In meteorology it has been found sufficient to use the equation for thermally perfect gases.
