Escape peak form, as in gas-flow detectors, when an incoming X-ray produces a characteristic X-ray from the detector material. These X-rays are produced near the surface of the detector crystal and if they are reabsorbed there is no problem. If, however, the X-ray "escapes" the detector, an escape peak is produced. The escape peaks in a Si(Li) detector are 1. 74 keV lower in energy that the incident X-rays(Ec for Si-Ka). In 1963, Bevan and Thoburn introduced a new concept in gas chromatographic detectors-a quantitative integral detector. These investigators made a practical gravimetric detector using an automatic-recording vacuum balance. Since the gravimetric detector integrates, a step-to-step pattern is provided instead of the usual chromatographic succession of peaks. The weight increase from each step-to-step increment is the amount of component present in that fraction and the total weight increase is the total sample weight. Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... Long Path Atmospheric Monitors. The use of laser sources over a long path to detect absorption from gaseous pollutants has been in the development stage for several years. These systems presently can detect average concentrations of pollutants such as ozone at the ppb level.
