Du Pont and Duke University collaborators have developed the Biolistic gene gun, a particle delivery system which employs microcarriers coated with genetic material to insert DNA into animal cells. The microcarriers are accelerated on macrocarriers in a stream of helium to fire the microcarriers into external tissue or, using surgery, into the livers of mice. The system has been used to insert genes encoding the enzyme, firefly luciferase, into mice and the next stage is likely to be insertion of a therapeutically useful gene into animal liver cells which would show the procedure to be of potential use in gene therapy.  1, fiche 1, Anglais, - gene%20gun

Particles with high kinetic energy that are injected into the plasma transfer their energy to the plasma particles through collisions and heat them. In a neutral particle injector first the ions are produced in an ion source and then accelerated by an electric field. To allow the fast ions to penetrate into the plasma without hindrance from the magnetic field cage, first they have to be re-neutralised. Chauffage par neutres. On vient de voir un mécanisme de chauffage où l'énergie est initialement portée par les électrons du plasma. On peut aussi utiliser des ions énergétiques. Une difficulté apparaît ici : des ions créés à l'extérieur de la configuration magnétique ne peuvent y pénétrer, car ils sont fortement déviés par le champ magnétique. Le procédé est alors le suivant : - on génère des ions avec une source d'ions; - on accélère ces ions jusqu'à l'énergie convenable (de l'ordre de 100 à 200 keV); - on neutralise les ions énergétiques dans une cellule à gaz; - à la sortie de cette cellule et après tri des particules indésirables (particules non neutralisées, etc.), on dispose d'un faisceau de particules neutres et énergétiques qui peuvent alors se propager dans le champ magnétique sans déviation; - arrivées au sein du plasma chaud, ces particules vont s'ioniser comme toutes les particules du plasma : elles sont, de ce fait, piégées dans la configuration magnétique; - les particules ainsi piégées abandonnent progressivement leur énergie en faveur du milieu qui voit ainsi sa température augmenter.  1, fiche 2, Français, - chauffage%20par%20particules%20neutres
