The transformation of an epithelium, usually mucosal or glandular, to a stratified squamous epithelium.

CONT

When an air passage is irritated(like from smoking or infection), the cells lining it can change from being like rectangles standing up next to each other, to being flatter and stacked on top of each other. This change is called squamous metaplasia because the cells now look like the type of cells called squamous cells. When the irritation disappears, for example when you stop smoking or the infection clears, the lining cells return to their normal appearance. Squamous metaplasia is not considered a pre-cancer, but if the irritation persists it can progress to squamous dysplasia.

In the homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) one assumes that the velocity, temperature and pressure between the phases or components are equal.

This assumption is based on the belief that differences in these three potential variables(and chemical potential if chemical reactions are considered) will promote momentum, energy, and mass transfer between the phases rapidly enough so that equilibrium is reached. For example, when one phase is finely dispersed in another phase generating large interfacial area, under certain circumstances this assumption can be made; e. g., bubbly flow of air in water or steam in water at high pressures. The resulting equations resemble those for a pseudo-fluid with mixture properties and an equation of state which links the phases to obtain these mixture thermodynamic properties. Whenever the HEM model is used it is advisable to check the validity of the equilibrium assumptions by using more accurate theoretical models for comparison. For example, rapid acceleration or pressure changes cannot be always accurately modelled with the HEM model; i. e., discharge of flashing vapor-liquid mixtures, or shock wave propagation through a multiphase medium. A tornado that occurs within supercells that contain well-established midlevel mesocyclones.

The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all.

Fall streaks form when snowflakes and ice crystals fall from cirrus clouds. The change in wind with height and how quickly these ice crystals fall determine the shapes and sizes the fall streaks attain. Background With the advent of horizontal wells in Improved Oil Recovery of heavy oils, a change is taking place in the approach to improved recovery of oil. Currently, there is a move from displacing oil in a flood pattern from injector to producers over long distances(of the order of hundreds of meters) to short-distance oil displacement(SDOD) processes(typically over a few meters). Due to the high viscosity of heavy oil, the displacement to producers located long distance away tends to make waterflooding inappropriate. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, Vapor Extraction and Toe-To-Heel Displacement Processes(TTHDP) belong to the SDOD processes. TTHDP can be applied as a non-thermal recovery technology, such as Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding or as a thermal technology such as Toe-To-Heel Steamflooding and Toe-To-Heel Air Injection. More than 17 laboratory tests of Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding(TTHW) showed that this process will provide good results for lighter heavy oil reservoirs(with viscosity less than 1200 mPas). Hele Shaw model tests indicated ultimate recovery factors substantially higher for the TTHW, when compared to conventional waterflooding using vertical wells.

D'après les inventeurs du procédé, l'huile réchauffée au niveau du front de combustion s'écoule vers le bas en direction du puits horizontal sous l'action de la gravité et est récupérée vers la surface. Une interrogation subsiste concernant la percée probable de l'air injecté dans ce puits horizontal qui aurait pour résultat de provoquer un arrêt du front de combustion. Using the technology of dual infrared sensors mounted inside the dash panel, Jeep's Dual-Zone Climate Control System independently measures the body surface temperature of both the driver and front passenger. By measuring the actual surface temperature of the front seat occupants, rather then the air temperature around them as most climate control systems do, the new Jeep can direct hot or cold air flow to continually meet the driver and passenger's perceived comfort level. As conditions in the vehicle change, due to exterior temperature or sunlight, the system adjusts to counter those circumstances.

Peroxide Forming Chemicals. Materials that are susceptible to peroxide formation(i. e., autooxidation) are ones that typically react with air, moisture or impurities and produce a change in their chemical composition in normal storage. The peroxides that form are less volatile than the solvent itself and thus tend to concentrate. This is particularly dangerous if peroxides are present during a distillation, where the applied heat to the concentrated solution may trigger a violent explosion. Equally dangerous is to allow a container of this material to evaporate to dryness, leaving the crystals of peroxide at the bottom of the container.

Chemicals that are sensitive to peroxide formation can be broken into three categories .... A. Peroxide hazard after prolonged storage. Form potentially explosive peroxides without concentrating. B. Chemicals which become a peroxide hazard if concentrated, such as through distillation or evaporation. Test for peroxide formation or discard after 1 year. C. Chemicals which are a hazard due to peroxide initiation of polymerization.

A research project on the possible effects of an accelerated sea level rise on the geomorphology and ecology of the Netherlands Wadden Sea was started in 1990 by the National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management/RIKZ of Rijkswaterstaat, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.
