While setting off the cars at Maxville, the conductor closed the angle cocks on the adjoining ends of the cars to be separated and did not vent the air, leaving the air brake line charged on the 74 cars left unattended on the main line. This practice is known in the industry as "bottling the air. "During a train service brake application, the head-end air brake pipe pressure is reduced below the tail-end air brake pipe pressure, creating a pressure differential. When the angle cock on a car is closed before the air pressure equalizes in the brake pipe, a pressure wave is created. This wave can initiate a brake release on the car, which will then cause the brakes to release on subsequent cars.

A valve that releases air trapped at a high point in a pressurized pipeline filled with liquid.

An air release valve can open against internal pressure because the internal lever mechanism multiplies the float force to be greater than the internal pressure. This greater force opens the orifice whenever air pockets collect in the valve. Air release valves are essential for pipeline efficiency and water hammer protection.

Quand il y a plusieurs appareils les ventilations sont raccordées à un réseau dit réseau de ventilation secondaire.

A steam trap operated by a float.

The discharge from the float trap is generally continuous. This type is used for draining condensate from steam headers, steam heating coils, and other similar equipment. When a float trap is used for draining a low pressure steam system, it should be equipped with a thermostatic air vent.

When enough condensate has drained (by gravity) into the trap body, the float is lifted which in turn lifts the pin off its seat and permits the condensate to flow into the return until the float has been sufficiently lowered to close the port. Temperature does not affect the operation of a float trap.

A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. If the products of combustion cannot escape, fresh air cannot reach the flame

When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame": "Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Lack of secondary air can be caused by incorrect venting, clogged flueways, blocked secondary air inlet openings, or lack of natural room makeup air to the oven.

Pressure gravity. This method fills to a level. It is almost universally restricted to filling carbonated beverages. The flow principle is gravity as the force causing flow into the container. Like the gravity vacuum method, which fills by gravity in a vacuum atmosphere, this method fills by gravity in a pressure atmosphere. Product under pressure is held in an integral overhead supply tank on the rotary. Filling valves are mounted in the tank and are opened against spring pressure by the container being lifted to the valve. When the container is sealed to the valve, a mechanical latch opens a charging valve at the top of the valve vent tube which is above the product level in the supply tank.... Fill level is determined when the rising liquid covers a part in the vent tube through which the air in the container is exhausted as product flows in.

Air release chambers are installed ahead of any metering equipment to ensure accurate measurement of fuel flow. They may be installed in either the pumphouse or on the dispensing platform. They operate on the reduced flow velocity principle which separates and eliminates air from the fuel. As the fuel enters the air release chamber(the diameter of which is much greater than the diameter of the inlet to the air release body), the velocity of the flow is greatly reduced allowing an interval of time for the air to separate from the fuel. Le bec, dans son principe, est semblable aux becs gravité simple et gravité pression, mais ne comporte ni joint de clapet, ni joint coulissant. Son étanchéité est assurée par la dépression dont la valeur absolue est légèrement supérieure à la pression hydrostatique à l'orifice d'écoulement du bec. Le processus d'emplissage est sensiblement le même que pour la formule gravité pression. La vitesse d'écoulement n'est pas influencée par la dépression. Une bouteille, comportant une section globale de fuites sensiblement égale ou supérieure à la section totale du bec, n'est pas emplie.

With conventional gas furnaces, little can be done to prevent losses of heated house air up the chimney when the furnace is firing. What can be prevented, though, is the loss that occurs when the furnace is not firing. A positive vent damper consists of a tight-fitting hinged damper door mounted in a steel collar and fitted into the flue pipe just before the pipe enters the chimney base. A fail-safe interlock switch prevents the furnace from firing unless the damper is completely open. This device may also be used with propane furnace.
