The removal of contaminated air and its replacement with clean air from the general workplace area.

As used on an MSDS [material safety data sheet], general ventilation, also known as dilution ventilation, is the removal of contaminated air from the general area and the bringing in of clean air. This dilutes the amount of contaminant in the work environment. General ventilation is usually suggested for non-hazardous materials.

OBS

As opposed to local ventilation, which is specific air changing in the immediate air of a contamination source. An example of local ventilation is a laboratory fume hood.

Aux fins des FTSS [fiche technique sur la sécurité des substances], la ventilation générale, également connue sous le nom de ventilation par dilution, consiste à évacuer l'air contaminé d'une pièce et à le remplacer par de l'air frais, ce qui réduit la quantité de contaminant qui se trouve dans l'air du milieu de travail. La ventilation générale sert ordinairement dans les cas où il s'agit de substances non dangereuses.

Le terme «ventilation par dilution» nous parait très douteux, «dilution» signifiant l'action de délayer dans un liquide, ou encore de diminuer la force de quelque chose en la dispersant, la fragmentant.

Exposure limits have different names and different meanings depending on who developed them and whether or not they are legal limits. For example, Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) are exposure guidelines developed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). They have been adopted by several Canadian governments as their legal limits. Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) are legal exposure limits in the United States.
