Hormone induction of sex inversion seems to be an efficient tool for producing dusky grouper males. However, oral administration of [hormones] to single fish proved to be very laborious and unsuitable at [a] commercial level. Sex inverted fish change back to females, and therefore repeated treatment was required to maintain male sex.

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
  • Optics
DEF

Method for investigating atmospheric behaviour using pulsed light beams (lasers).

CONT

Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding.

OBS

The fruit is grown and harvested in a labor-intensive process that involves an army of workers, lots of equipment, crop-dusting airplanes, foam cushions, string, bags, special cartons, refrigerated trucks and trains, and tons of pesticides. While production methods vary slightly from plantation to plantation, the basic operations... remain the same... Commercial banana plants grow from 15 to 30 feet in height and are grown in long rows on large irrigated plantations. Most bananas consumed in the United States are grown in the lowlands of Central and South America. The average banana plant produces fruit about every nine months. The stem usually grows to contain about 150 bananas. When the manager decides, the fruit is cut green from the plant and dropped carefully on the back of a worker carrying a cushion to stop any bruising of the fruit.

Subject field(s)

CONT

The word "cutter" is a trade term, and refers to the manner inwhich such carcasses are marketed--generally in cuts. Usually, only the ribs and loins of such carcasses will be accepted by the retail fresh-meat trade. Cutter carcasses, as a rule, lack fat covering, except for a thin coat over the back.... Carcasses of this grade are therefore usually boned out for the boneless meat trade, and for curing, sausage, and canning purposes.... Carcasses thrown out of any grade because of extensive bruises often are referred to as "cutters, "because they are never sold in sides or quarters, but are sent to the cutting departments, where the sound parts are converted into commercial cuts. When thus treated, the cuts fall in the grade to which they belong on the basis of quality, conformation, and finish. "Cutter" in this sense has no reference to the "cutter" grade.

The main purpose for investigating postmortem metabolism of muscle is to help explain and control things such as PSE that have a practical, commercial importance in the meat trade. Watery pork that appears unusually pale and which has a high fluid loss when cut and presented for sale has been around for a long time, with the first scientific reports dating back to the early 1900s. In the scientific literature the condition is most commonly called PSE, standing for pale, soft, and exudative pork... PSE pork that was avoided in the fresh state by a customer because of its unattractive appearance is just as likely to be rejected by a meat processor.

  • Petroleum Distillation
CONT

The Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis(SMDS) plant now operational at Bintulu, Malaysia, is the latest in a series of partnership projects between Shell companies and the people of Malaysia that stretches back for more than 100 years. The new plant uses advanced technology to convert natural gas, abundantly available from the Central Luconia field offshore Sarawak, into liquid fuels of high purity. These fuels can also be used as components to upgrade lower quality stock derived from conventional crude oil processing. In addition, the plant can produce high-value waxes, as well as feedstocks for detergents and lubricants. The product mix can be varied to meet market needs. The SMDS technology was developed at the Shell laboratory in Amsterdam(KSLA) over a period of 20 years. After commercial and technical assessment, Bintulu was chosen in preference to sites in other parts of the world as an appropriate location for the employment of SMDS technology in the first commercial plant.

... attaching commercial sockets of forged steel to wire rope ends... The wire rope is seized at the end and another seizing is applied at a distance from the end equal to the length of the basket of the socket... For large ropes, the seizing should be several inches long. The end seizing is now removed and the strands are separated so that the fiber core can be cut back to the next siezing. The individual wires are then untwisted and "broomed out" and for the distance they are to be inserted in the socket are carefully cleaned with benzine, naphtha, or unleaded gasoline.

CONT

There are three types of zinced endings: A cone is formed from molten zinc poured into a mold in which a frayed rope end has been inserted; sometimes a ferrule is used as mold and stays on after pouring the zinc; or sockets are used instead of the ferrule. An open socket has ears to hold a pin and cotter. A closed socket has a loop or "bail." Both are heavy forgings and find widespread use. All three zinced on endings need a good deal of preparation. The rope’s end must be broomed out, cleaned with acid and straightened. Special endings: such as thimbles, clips, and clamps are quicker and easier to apply than a zinc socket, but efficiency is not as high as with other attachments.

brilliant product designer.

There are now a handful of such product wizards in operation, mostly in California. Product wizards offer speed that even some of Silicon Valley's most agile new companies can’t match. Apple Computer, for instance, develops most of its own products, but when it meeded a rush job on the mouse, it went to Kelley. The idea for the mouse dated back a decade-before Apple itself was formed-but the original design was cumbersome and costly. Maybe so, but the product-wizard business itself keeps growing. Several newer shops opened just recently, and both Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Texas A&M are forming product-design programs similar to Stanford's, which are likely to bring lucrative commercial spin-offs.
