Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding.

A form of x-ray which creates cross-sectional images. X-ray beams pass through the body at different angles and are then recorded by detectors and channeled into a computer which produces cross-sectional views at different planes.

As the x-ray tube and detector make this 360° rotation, the detector takes numerous snapshots(called profiles) of the attenuated x-ray beam. Typically, in one 360° lap, about 1, 000 profiles are sampled. Each profile is subdivided spatially(divided into partitions) by the detectors and fed into about 700 individual channels. Each profile is then backwards reconstructed(or "back projected") by a dedicated computer into a two-dimensional image of the "slice" that was scanned.

Laser Position Measurement. A commercially available position measuring device, Lasernet, was donated by the Namco Controls Corporation. A single narrow-beam laser is continuously swept across the field at a fixed height. A reflector of known geometry on the vehicle reflects the beam back to the device, which reports the initial angle, in the local geographic frame, at which a reflection is detected and the angular width over which the reflection is continuously detected. Knowing the geometry of the reflector, which should be independent of the heading of the aircraft, is sufficient to determine the vehicle's two-dimensional position in the local geographic frame.

A radar having the capability to illuminate several subswaths by scanning its antenna off-nadir into different positions.

Instead of having the beam sweep along in a continuous fashion, we triggered the TR [transformer-rectifier] modules to electronically wiggle the beam back and forth, perpendicular to the direction of flight. In the radar world, we call this ScanSAR(Scanning Synthetic Aperture Radar), because the beam scans across swath the way an electron beam sweeps across the face of a cathode-ray tube to make a television picture. You point the beam at one spot on the ground for about a tenth of a second, then zip it over to another place and point it there for a while, then you zip it over to a third place, then a fourth. By looking at four such subspots, you can sweep out a much wider swath of data.

A radar pulse is transmitted from the antenna to the ground. The radar pulse is scattered by the ground targets back to the antenna.

In synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i. e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam.

Simultanément, la scène est balayée dans le sens de déplacement du satellite (along track) à la fréquence d'émission des impulsions notée fp ou PRD (Pulse Rate Frequency) : (entre 1640 et 1720 Hz, par pas de 2 Hz dans le cas d'ERS-1). Les échelles de grandeur des divers mécanismes mis en jeux étant différentes, nous pouvons les supposer indépendants entre eux. Le signal reçu peut être ainsi organisé dans une matrice bi-dimensionnelle, où les paramètres de temps et de distance sont représentés respectivement en ligne par le cadencement des impulsions (PRF) et en colonne par la position des échos sur la ligne, une ligne étant acquise à chaque émission d'une impulsion radar (ou pulse). Une colonne de l'image représentera l'ensemble des réponses des réflecteurs placés à une distance donnée de l'antenne (distance radiale). Sa position sur la ligne est linéairement liée au temps mis par l'onde radar à lui revenir après s'être réfléchie sur le point cible, le radar étant considéré immobile durant ce temps.

MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...)

Laser gyros exibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositley traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. Therefore, at low rotation rates, there is no frequency difference between the counter-rotating beams so that the gyroscope does not indicate any rotation. In spite of the ring laser gyro's dead zone whith lock-in thresholds on the order of hundreds of degrees per hour, it is still feasible to obtain measurements of rotation rates of less than 1 deg/h.
