BACK BURNER [9 fiches]

Fiche 1 2007-08-03

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
CONT

A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. If the products of combustion cannot escape, fresh air cannot reach the flame

CONT

When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame" :"Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Lack of secondary air can be caused by incorrect venting, clogged flueways, blocked secondary air inlet openings, or lack of natural room makeup air to the oven.

A burner in which the fuel and air are not mixed until just as they leave the burner port, after which mixing is usually very rapid. The flame cannot flash back in this type of burner.

Low-high-low prepurge-a prepurge period during which the air damper is driven open for the purge period and then back to low fire position for the burner lightoff. This is called low-high-low proven prepurge if suitable interlocks indicate that the damper actually reached the open position during prepurge, and then closed again before ignition trials.

DEF

A recession of flame to a position where it is not expected or not wanted (as into a blowpipe)....

DEF

The phenomenon which occurs when a flame front moves back through a burner nozzle(and possibly back to the air-fuel mixing point). Flashback occurs because the flame propagation rate exceeds the velocity with which the air-fuel mixture flows through the burner nozzle.

CONT

Devices to prevent flame blow-back are often fitted on the boilers and at various gas user points.

CONT

The rotary oil burner is a horizontal atomizing unit consisting of only one moving part, a hollow steel shaft, on which are mounted the atomizing cup, the fan, and the motor rotor. These parts comprise the shaft assembly, which rotates on two ball bearings. The fuel oil is introduced by means of a stationary fuel tube extending through the centre of the hollow main shaft of the burner into the atomizing cup.... In the Ray rotary oil burner, the oil is introduced into the tail end of the fuel tube, passes through the tube, and flows out of the fuel tip into the back portion of the atomizing cup. The fuel tube and tip are stationary and the oil passages are such size that high pressure is not required to obtain the rated oil capacity.

The Hot-Mix Paving Industry.... The volume of exhaust gas required to dry each ton of aggregate increases by more than 10% for each additional percent of moisture removed. Maintaining a production rate with increased moisture means that more exhaust gas may be created from combustion and evaporation of water than the fan can remove. This causes the pressure in the drum to become greater than the outside air. The back pressure thus created causes the familiar puff-back at the burner opening.
