The crew module contains advances in life support, avionics, power systems, and advanced manufacturing techniques, and is the only portion of Orion that returns to Earth at the end of flights.

The bow caps and shutters are mechanically linked to a hydraulically operated drive rod from within the torpedo compartment. The bow cap opens first behind the shutter, which then folds back against it forming a smooth exit tube.

A test used to diagnose benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) that consists of a series of head, neck, and body movements that reproduce the vertigo sensation.

The Dix-Hallpike test is typically performed in a doctor's office. The doctor will ask you to sit upright on an exam table with your legs stretched out in front of you and your head turned to one side. They will then ask you to lower your head and torso back so that you end up lying with your head stretched off the edge of the exam table, turned with one ear down at a 45-degree angle. If there are misplaced calcium deposits(also called canaliths) in the posterior canal of your inner ear, this will trigger vertigo symptoms.

Benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is the gold standard test used to diagnose BPPV, which is crucial in confirming posterior canal BPPV.

Also, a split back yoke can help to match the shirt pattern on the sleevehead. The closet auger is a cane-shaped tube with a coiled spring "snake" inside. Its handle rotates the coiled hook on the end of the snake. To put the closet auger into the trap of the water closet bowl, first draw the coiled spring all the way up into the cane-like curve of the closet auger. Hook the cane end, with its projecting hook, into the trap.... Begin turning the handle to rotate the coiled spring as it is pushed down into the trap of the water closet bowl. Continue to rotate the handle until the snake reaches the obstruction. Turn the handle slowly until the obstruction is caught on the coiled hook of the closet auger. Continue to rotate the handle and pull back at the same time to bring the obstruction up into the water closet bowl where it can be removed.

Continuer à tourner jusqu'à ce que le furet atteigne l'obstruction, puis tourner la manivelle plus lentement jusqu'à ce que le crochet du dégorgeoir agrippe cette dernière. Tout en continuant à tourner la manivelle, retirer l'outil pour ramener l'obstruction dans la cuvette et l'en retirer.

The term PLAR(private line automatic ringdown) was used to distinguish this service from its predecessor service PLMR(private line manual ringdown) back in the days of the crank operated telephone.... In PLAR operation, two telephones are dedicated for point-to-point voice communication. When both phones are idle, "on-hook", all is quiet. When a phone at one end is picked up, "off-hook", the phone at the other end would instantly ring to alert the other end to pick up. The rotary dryer, sometimes known as a rotary kiln, is a type of industrial dryer employed to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into direct contact with heated gas. The dryer is made up of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by concrete columns or steel beams. The dryer slopes slightly so that the discharge end is lower than the material feed end in order to convey the material through the dryer under gravity. Material to be dried enters the higher end of the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough to roll back off the fins, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot air stream as it falls.

Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31 December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1 January or, in many cases, 2 January. The roots of Hogmanay reach back to the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator.

Premièrement, l'ascenseur serait constitué d'un câble d'une longueur de 91 000 km et d'un diamètre variant de 1 micron à 11.5 cm. Ce filin serait mis en orbite à l'aide d'une navette spatiale aidée de quelques propulseurs supplémentaires, qui, une fois en orbite géostationnaire, serviraient de contrepoids. Les forces centripètes repousseraient alors la partie haute du filin vers l'espace tandis que la partie basse serait attirée par la Terre, mettant le tout en tension. Ce premier lien serait capable d'envoyer plus d'une tonne en orbite. Il suffira ensuite d'utiliser ce premier câble pour en mettre en orbite de nouveaux. Ces filins seront constitués de nanotubes de carbone. Le plus gros défi technologique serait de construire 91 000 km de nanotubes car aujourd'hui la technologie ne permet d'en construire que quelques centimètres. Le ratio actuel nanotube/résine epoxy est de 60/40. Il faudra réussir à descendre à 98/2. Les principaux risques liés au transport par ascenseur seront dus aux météorites, aux ouragans ou aux attaques terroristes. Le filin pourra être réparé in-situ. Ce système ne nécessiterait pas de maîtriser la fusion nucléaire. De simples batteries et panneaux solaires suffiront à alimenter l'ascenseur. La plupart des technologies nécessaires existent déjà ou existeront dans le court terme. Les prévisions actuelles prévoient un budget de 7 à 10 milliards sur 15 ans.

MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...)

The Ausroc 3(A3) launch vehicle has a liquid fuelled motor that burns JA-1 kerosene with liquid oxygen, and uses regenerative cooling. The motor produces 35 kN at sea level and has a burn time of 80 seconds. The motor is gimballed to facilitate pitch and yaw control. The wall of the combustion chamber, throat and expansion nozzle consists of 102 stainless steel tubes stacked side by side running parallel to the motor axis. The tubes will be brazed together and the assembly wrapped in a carbon fibre composite. The composite wrapping is used to relieve to tubes of the hoop stress generated by the combustion pressure(2 MPa), whilst the tubes contain the combustion heat(3500 K). The top end of the motor has a kerosene inlet manifolt, oxygen dome and injector block. The kerosene inlet manifold delivers kerosene to every second motor tube, where it travels down to the arse end of the motor. Here it enters the lower kerosene manifold which is a simple plenum ring. This allows the kerosene to flow into the other alternate tubes which deliver it back up to the inlet manifold. The inlet manifold then directs the kerosene to the injector block, which sprays it and the liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber.

There are three types of zinced endings: A cone is formed from molten zinc poured into a mold in which a frayed rope end has been inserted; sometimes a ferrule is used as mold and stays on after pouring the zinc; or sockets are used instead of the ferrule. An open socket has ears to hold a pin and cotter. A closed socket has a loop or "bail." Both are heavy forgings and find widespread use. All three zinced on endings need a good deal of preparation. The rope’s end must be broomed out, cleaned with acid and straightened. Special endings: such as thimbles, clips, and clamps are quicker and easier to apply than a zinc socket, but efficiency is not as high as with other attachments.

A supercharger which is located between the carburetor outlet and the intake manifold of the engine is called an internal supercharger. A supercharger thus located serves to provide a uniform distribution of the fuel-air charge to the various cylinders, as well as to increase the density of the charge. Maintaining a high manifold pressure ahead of the intake valves allows the use of "valve overlap" in the engine, so that the intake valve opens just before the exhaust valve closes at the end of the exhaust stroke. This allows the compressed mixture from the intake manifold to scavenge the spent gases out of the clearance volume of the cylinder and also tends to improve the cooling of the exhaust valve. This cooling is of particular importance when operating at "military" or "take-off" power. With no supercharging between the carburetor and the intake valves, "valve overlapping" would permit exhaust gases to flow back into the intake manifold. This would cause backfiring and dilution of the next charge of mixture with burned exhaust gases.

Mounted on this blade are two arms, one on either side of the chain conveyor, which gather the material from the muckpile and feed it on to the loader conveyor. The tail or back end of the conveyor is designed to swivel and elevate hydraulically so that the coal or stone can be loaded into a car or on to another conveyor.

A trade name for a heavy caterpillar-mounted continuous miner for operation in thick seams. The front end contains two cutter-arms which rotate in opposite directions to sweep the coal they cut inwards towards the centre. The broken coal is taken back through the machine to a chain conveyor. Two cutter chains are arranged at roof and floor level behind the arms to cut down the coal left between the rotating arms. The machine cuts an area 12 ft wide and 7 ft high. Power is supplied by two motors, one of 70 h. p. and the other 25 h. p. It has a continuous capacity from 3 to 3 1/2 t. p. m. This machine has been subject to several modifications.

A device known as a pop, or blind riveter will install and set rivets without the use of a tool to support the work.... Each rivet has a pin, or mandrel, which is automatically broken off, removed, and discarded after the rivet has been set. The stem of the rivet is inserted in the tool and placed through the hole. As the tool is squeezed, the mandrel draws the concealed end of the rivet back, expands it to completely fill the hole, then breaks off as soon as the head is formed.

The pot is a small-bore plunger cylinder without a torpedo. The two cylinders are connected by a valve. When the valve is open, the melting or plasticizing cylinder pushes the material into the nozzle end of the pot, forcing the plunger back. When the plunger moves back an experimentally predetermined distance, the filling stops and the valve is closed, because the backward motion of the plunger actuates a limit switch. At the appropriate time in the cycle the material is injected into the mold from the second cylinder, the so-called shooting cylinder or pot.
