A cutback is a surfing maneuver with which you change your direction on the rail by going back to the breaking part of the wave. See, when you’re at full speed, there's a big chance that you’re getting away from the breaking wave and heading towards the flat spots of the shoulder that don’t have the intrinsic power to carry you. So, you’ll lose speed, and you’ll need to get back to the wave to gain as much speed as you can. That's when you should perform a cutback. Laser Position Measurement. A commercially available position measuring device, Lasernet, was donated by the Namco Controls Corporation. A single narrow-beam laser is continuously swept across the field at a fixed height. A reflector of known geometry on the vehicle reflects the beam back to the device, which reports the initial angle, in the local geographic frame, at which a reflection is detected and the angular width over which the reflection is continuously detected. Notice that there is no knob to set the heading of the DG [directional gyro] to match that of the compass. Why? Because it is slaved. Slaved? Back in the tailcone of the aircraft, away from all ferrous metal, is a magnetic compass. The output of this compass is electrically "enhanced" and amplified through a "flux gate"... This signal is fed to the HSI to drive the DG portion of the unit. What this means is that the reading is very accurate, not subject to the vagrancies of the regular magnetic compass, and is constantly being corrected for drift. Dead reckoning is a technique of computing the position of a vehicle from its distance and heading measurements. It is an inertial system which uses two independent sensors from which distance and heading information can be extracted. Because each position is relative, cumulative drift errors occur on an average of 2% of the distance traveled. The system consists of a magnetic compass or gyroscope for heading and odometer for distance. Dead reckoning is often combined with map matching to correct for drift errors.
