Adaptable textiles, sometimes called "smart" textiles, have very sophisticated devices placed into them, which give them interactive or adaptable functions. The principle is to include a physical or chemical, sensitive and reactive system in the fibres or textiles. This firstly allows the textiles to sense and analyse the changes taking place in the environment, and secondly to react to this information by an action or modification of all kinds. This action may be linked to a remote transmission of the information.

Long continuous filaments of acetate or rayon will produce fabrics which may have smooth or crepe-effect surfaces. Either filament can be adapted for other effects by cutting it into short uniform lengths from 1/2 to 9 inches. These lengths are spun into yarns... According to the amount of twist inserted in the spinning process, this spun yarn can be made stronger, less lustrous, and adaptable to napping and other finishes, thus producing fabrics that resemble wool, linen, or cotton. FluidPac is a facility to conduct experimental investigations on fluids in weightlessness. It is conceived to allow observation and quantitative measurements of typical thermo-capillary phenomena at a free liquid-gas interface, but other kinds of fluid physics experiments may be performed as well. The instrument is reusable, adaptable to the experiment needs, foresees multi-purpose diagnostics, and can accommodate three to four complex experiment containers.... A generic elastomeric fiber launched in 1969 by Rohm and Haas under the trademark, Anim/8. This fiber was declared a generic fiber by the Federal Trade Commission in 1970. It is equally adaptable to weaving and knitting and can be used in corespun, covered, plied or bare yarns. It takes both permanent-press and soil-release finishes, and it retains elasticity after washing and dry cleaning. If bleached with chlorine, Anim/8 remains white, not graying or yellowing.
