The meal moth is attracted to out-of-condition grain and is not a problem in dry sound grain. It can also be found in stored cereals and moist flour, bran or hay. This insect thrives in damp or mouldy locations and may be present in very large numbers. The adult has a wing-speed of about 2. 5 centimetres. The forewings are light brown with dark brown patches at the base and tip and each has two wavy, transverse white lines.

The female lays about 250 eggs. The whitish larvae have a brown head and a black first-body-segment. When fully grown they are about 2.5 centimetres long. The larvae web the grain kernels together in clusters. Under summer conditions the life cycle requires about eight weeks.

La pyrale de la farine s'attaque au grain endommagé et ne représente donc pas une menace pour le grain sec et sain. On la trouve également dans les céréales entreposées et dans la farine, le son ou le foin humide. Cet insecte prolifère dans les endroits humides ou moisis, où on peut le trouver en très grand nombre. L'envergure des ailes d'un adulte atteint 2,5 cm environ. Les ailes antérieures, d'un beige verdâtre, offrent à leur base, comme à leur extrémité, deux larges taches d'un brun foncé limitées, chacune, par un filet sinueux de couleur blanche.

La femelle pond environ deux cent cinquante œufs. La chenille, de couleur blanchâtre, a la tête brune et le premier segment du thorax noir. Au terme de son développement, la chenille mesure environ 2,5 cm de long. La chenille tisse des toiles formant des sacs pleins de grain. Le cycle, en été, exige environ huit semaines.

A liquid magnet.... The melt of an alloy(Co80-Pd20) which is ferromagnetic in the solid state at room temperature was undercooled below its melting point. The freely suspended droplet(diameter approx. 7 mm)-processed in the coil of an electromagnetic levitation facility-was attracted by a permanent magnet when the temperature approached the Curie temperature(lower picture). The attractive force depends on the temperature in a way characteristic for ferromagnetic materials. When an ionizing particle enters the device, it collides with gas atoms and strikes electrons from their orbit around the nucleus of the gas atoms. In addition, an ionizing particle striking the outside of the tube can also knock electrons off the metal casing. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together ... . The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results ... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees... through open vents in late winter and early spring.... New understandings in insect colour vision(Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents(daylight with UV)... versus the greenhouse roof and walls(attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. The former would be easier and cheaper. UV light encourages the germination of spores of grey mould(Botrytis), so UV opaque plastics are favoured.

The idea that a distributor should have an exclusive territory for the sale of the manufacturer's products is characteristic of commercial concessions, rather than franchises, but this idea has lately tended to give way to the more flexible concept of the distributor's zone of principal responsibility. As in the case of the franchise, this refers not so much to a particular geographical area as to the customers who are to be attracted to buying the products in question.
