Subject field(s)

CONT

We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station.

CONT

DEF

A system of radio navigation in which an aircraft receives interrelated pulses transmitted from ground stations and determined its position by plotting the observed intervals between the pulses.

CONT

GEE used a series of transmitters sending out precisely timed signals, and the aircraft using GEE... examined the time of arrival on an oscilloscope at the navigator's station. If the signal from two stations arrived at the same time, the aircraft must be an equal distance from both transmitters, allowing the navigator to determine a line of position on his chart of all the positions at that distance from both stations. By making similar measurements with other stations, additional lines of position can be produced, leading to a fix.

Wind speed is the measurement of the wind blowing toward your observation station. It is measured using a wind instrument such as an anemometer or visual observation using the Beaufort scale. The speed of the wind is recorded on your station model by adding hash marks and pennants at the end of the shaft you used to record the wind direction. The hash marks and pennants should be drawn on the right side of the wind shaft as viewed by a person facing the wind with their back to the station. [The figure] below is a station model recording clear skies, winds out of the northwest at 15 miles per hour...

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1.

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length.

Extra Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitor... The purpose of EVARM is to carry out flight experiments to investigate and characterize the doses received by different parts of an astronauts body(e. g., skin, eyes, and blood-forming organs) during an EVA. The doses will be analyzed with respect to the time and position of the EVA as well as the orbit, altitude, and attitude of the Station. A relatively new type of electronic radiation dosimeter, the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor(MOSFET) will be used to collect dose measurements.

CONT

EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges - a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen - called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) - that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment (NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground.

Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module(RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit(ORU). The surrounding structure will be "mocked up" to represent a typical ISS structure and ISS procedures will be used for the changeout.

Two spacewalking cosmonauts set up a "Strela, "or "Arrow, "cargo boom outside the Pirs airlock last November. That telescoping crane can be extended to the rear end of the Zvezda crew module. Mounted to the opposite side of Pirs, the Strela boom installed by Onufrienko and Walz is positioned so that it can be reeled out to the end of the Zarya space tug, which is hooked up to the U. S. side of the station. Both booms are capable of hoisting cargoes that weigh as much as three tons. They can be operated either separately or simultaneously to move cargoes or spacewalkers around the outer hull of the Russian half of the outpost.

OBS

The term "Arrow" is the English equivalent of "Strela".

CEO [Crew Earth Observation] is conducted primarily from the nadir-viewing, optical-quality window in the U. S. Destiny Laboratory Module. The window can view 39. 5 degrees forward along the axis of the Station, 32. 2 degrees aft, and a total of 79. 1 degrees from port to starboard. The window is constructed of four panes. The outermost pane, made of fused silica, is designed to withstand oribital debris and can be changed out by extravehicular activity(EVA) if it becomes damaged. The two center panes, also made of fused silica, are the primary and redundant pressure panes. The interior pane, made of glass laminate, is called the scratch or "kick" pane. This pane protects the primary pressure pane from scratches and damage caused by contact with the crew, and has an ultraviolet/infrared(UV/IR) coating to protect the crew and improve picture quality.
