Synthetic gene drives are a new form of genetic engineering that overcomes the normal rules of inheritance, and which may allow the deliberate eradication or modification of species and populations in the wild. Gene drives distort the process of inheritance so that the probability of particular genes—and thus specific traits—being passed on is increased substantially above the usual 50%(known as the Mendelian rule of inheritance). Over the course of several generations, genes with higher inheritance rates will rapidly spread through a breeding population... Thus, in theory at least, a gene drive can be employed to force genetic changes into an entire population.

gene drive: In English, a differentiation is sometimes made between a synthetic gene drive, a bioengineered process, and a natural gene drive, a natural process of inheritance. As used herein, the term "control law" can refer to one or more mathematical formulae used by a control system to command, manage, direct, or regulate the behavior of another device, such as a robot. Control laws can be used singularly or [in] combination to produce a control signal based on another signal(e. g., positive feedback, negative feedback, etc.) and one or more control variables. The output of the control law is a signal that is passed to the robot to cause it to move based on the difference between desired values and actual values(e. g., sensor data). For example, a PID [proportional-integral-derivative] controller combines three control laws where one control variable scales the present value of the error, another control variable scales the integral of the error, and a third control variable scales the derivative of the error. These scaled terms can then be fed back to the system to change the signal.

M-FC Agar is used for the detection of faecal coliforms by the membrane filtration technique.

Membrane filtration is the method of choice for the analysis of fecal coliforms in water. Samples to be tested are passed through a filter of particular pore size(generally 0. 45 micrometre). The microorganisms present in the water remain on the filter surface. When the filter is placed in a sterile Petri dish and saturated with an appropriate medium, growth of the desired organisms is encouraged, while that of other organisms is suppressed.... A 100 ml volume of a water sample is drawn through a membrane filter(0. 45 µm pore size) through the use of a vacuum pump. The filter is placed on a Petri dish containing M-FC agar and incubated for 24 hours at 44. 5 °C(112. 1 degrees F). This elevated temperature heat shocks non-fecal bacteria and suppresses their growth.

La méthode de filtration sur membrane consiste à recueillir, identifier et dénombrer, à la surface d'une membrane filtrante stérile, les bactéries coliformes d'origine fécale dans un échantillon d'eau. Il s'agit de filtrer à travers une membrane de porosité de 0,45 mm un volume déterminé de l'échantillon, de déposer cette membrane sur un milieu de culture sélectif, la gélose m-FC, et d'incuber cette gélose à 44,5 ± 0,2 °C pendant 24 ± 2 heures. Dans ces conditions, les coliformes fécaux forment des colonies bleues, permettant ainsi de les énumérer et de les identifier de façon présomptive. La présence de coliformes fécaux est confirmée ensuite par une réaction positive au test de l'ONPG [test d'utilisation de o-nitrophényl-β-D-galactopyranoside ou de présence de l'enzyme β-galactosidase] et une réaction négative à l'épreuve de la cytochrome-oxydase. Une confirmation spécifique de E. coli demande aussi une réaction positive de l'épreuve du MUG [test d'utilisation de 4-méthylumbelliféryl-β-D-glucuronide]. La présence de sels biliaires dans le milieu m-FC inhibe la croissance de la majorité des organismes à Gram positif et les micro-organismes sporulants alors que le sel de sodium de l'acide rosolique inhibe la croissance d'une variété de bactéries non coliformes.

A boiler in which the water to be vaporized is housed in a drum through which horizontal tubes (fire tubes) are run.

Fire-tube boilers may be designed for vertical, inclined, or horizontal positions. One of the most generally used types is the horizontal-return-tube(HRT) boiler. In the HRT boiler, part of the heat from the combustion gases is transferred directly to the lower portion of the shell. The gases then make a return pass through the horizontal tubes or flues before being passed into the stack.

The ... horizontal return tube boiler ... gets it’s name from the horizontal fire tubes which run back-to-front through the lower half of the boiler drum. The gas burner is located under the front half of the boiler drum. The hot gases then pass to the rear of the fire box where they turn round and return to the front via the fire tubes and into the smoke box. (see this picture for a clearer description).

The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum.

Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense.

On forcing a cell suspension at high pressure through a narrow orifice, the rapid pressure drop provides a very powerful means of disrupting the cells. In practice it is simple to design equipment to subject the cell suspension to shear forces before releasing the pressure. By changing the pressure applied, cells may be disrupted completely or only sufficiently to release periplasmic enzymes.... [Experimentors have] used a liquid shear system for the disruption of chloroplasts. The suspension was passed through a needle valve at pressures up to 20, 000 p. s. i. and a flow rate of 10 ml/min. Under these conditions, rupture of E. coli was indicated by an increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity.

In practical terms liquid shear is associated with the generation of heat. As a result subsequent increases in the temperature of the suspension of up to 40 °C may be encountered. Cell suspensions must, therefore, be introduced to the apparatus at 0-4°C to minimise loss of enzyme activity. If recycling is used then cooling before re-entry is essential. Equally, with this type of equipment the best results are obtained by using a homogeneous cell suspension. Irregular particle sizes owing to filamentous or pelleted growth modes reduce the efficiency of cell breakage.

In 1991, in order to publicize Japan's regime of enforced prostitution during the Second World War, activists started to collect data about the women victims of sexual slavery. After 50 years of silence, women survivors, in their 70s and 80s, came forward to demand justice and redress. One of the main outcomes of this lengthy and sustained documentation work was the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery. The Tokyo Tribunal, as it came to be called, was held in December 2000 in Tokyo. The Tribunal was attended by 70 victims and more than 1100 participants. The final judgment was passed in December 2001, at a Women'sInternational Tribunal held in The Hague, Netherlands.

La luz difunde en la laringe y es captada por una célula fotoeléctrica colocada por encima de la laringe. In 1964, Congress passed the Bartlett Act(Pub. L. No 88-308, 78 Stat. 194) which excluded foreign vessels from fishing within the United States’ territorial sea, defined as all ocean waters within three miles from the coast. Two years later, Congress passed the Contiguous Fisheries Zone Act(Pub. L. No. 89-658, 80 Stat. 908), which created a nine-mile contiguous zone extending out from the three-mile limit, from which foreign fishing vessels would be excluded. These acts and treaties failed to protect U. S. fisheries as they were intended to. The Bartlett Act provided no authority for federal management measures, limiting the federal government's role to data collection and law enforcement against foreign fishers. Other nations also found their fisheries to be suffering, as most treaties provided no means of enforcement against nations who had not chosen to enter into an agreement. As a result, several countries moved to extend the area of their marine jurisdiction. By 1975, of the parties involved in ongoing law-of-the-sea negotiations, sixty nations including the United States, favored a twelve-mile territorial sea and a two-hundred-mile resource conservation zone.
