SEW was developed based upon the assumption that disease transmission form the sow to the pig is minimal during the first three weeks of age when the sows milk provides the highest antibody protection for the pig. Basically, sows are immune to diseases that affect the growing pig, but serve as a source of infection to their offspring. Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. A sample of the fuel is then sent to the laboratory for further testing, especially with respect to the flash point. For simple thickening of very dilute stocks up to 12% consistency, multidisc thickeners... can be used. A fiber mat forms on the face of each sector as it submerges in the vat of stock. After complete submergence, vacuum is applied and more pulp is deposited while filtrate is drawn through the mat. The initial filtrate is relatively cloudy and can be segregated(by the action of the end valve) for dilution uses. The later(clear) filtrate is sufficiently free of fiber to be used for shower water. Following emergence from the vat, the pulp mat is further dewatered and finally removed from the filter media by a knockoff shower.
