The Dextre-Operated Camera(DOC) is an upcoming portable enhanced-vision tool that can be attached to Dextre, the International Space Station's handyman. We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station.

Il comprend deux transpondeurs à spectre étalé, deux équipements de gestion de protocoles CCSDS [Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems] et des équipements radio fréquence. Le PCE sera installé dans le module Zvezda de l'ISS et sera opérationnel durant la phase dite «de proximité» correspondant aux 30 derniers kilomètres du vol ATV et à l'exercice délicat de son arrimage à la Station. Ce rendez-vous orbital automatique représentera une première européenne. Parmi l'ensemble des données de commande et de contrôle qu'il transmettra dans le cadre de sa mission de communications, le PCE fournira à l'ATV les informations de position GPS [système mondial de localization] nécessaires à la navigation relative vers la Station spatiale internationale (ISS). À une distance de 500 m et jusqu'à l'arrimage, la navigation se poursuivra à l'aide d'instruments laser, d'abord avec un télégoniomètre puis avec un vidéomètre pour les phases finales.

One of the intended missions of the DRAC system is to immediately detect all presence or advancing infantry units or vehicles at a particular location or within a specific corridor in the command zone of the reconnaissance units, without having to deploy any ground sensors. Each system consists of two fixed-wing aerial vehicles from the Tracker series, interchangeable gyro-stabilised visible-spectrum and infrared payloads, a data link and a portable, multifunction, ruggedised ground station. The latter in turn comprises two sets of functions : for mission preparation and control and for payload operation respectively. The complete equipment is packed in a rucksack that can be easily transported and deployed by two men. This feature makes DRAC particularly suitable for use by paratroopers.

However, regionalized forecasts need to be adjusted for local effects. The single station approach is used to forecast weather elements which are highly dependent on local effects because typical local conditions are built into the relationship for each equation. These issues are discussed in detail by Maglares and Carter(1986). Since local effects are very important factors in determining the occurrence of precipitation in mountainous terrain, the single station approach was used for this project.

The Service Module will be the first fully Russian contribution to the International Space Station... The 42, 000-pound module, similar in layout to the core module of Russia's Mir Space Station, will provide the early station living quarters; life support system; electrical power distribution; data processing system; flight control system; and propulsion system. Zvezda est le Module de Service de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS). Ce module de conception russe s'inspire très largement de la Station Mir. Mesurant 13.1 m de long, il est constitué de deux gros cylindres de 2.9 m et 4.2 m de diamètre. Ce sont les espaces de commande et d'habitation. Le poste de commande reçoit l'énergie des panneaux solaires qu'il supporte, pour recharger 8 batteries nickel-cadmium fournissant 28 volts sous 110 Ampère-heure. Ce courant électrique alimente l'éclairage bien sûr, mais aussi les systèmes de recyclage tels que Elektron qui produit par électrolyse de l'oxygène à partir d'eau, ainsi que les systèmes de climatisation. La partie habitation comprend une salle d'eau, un atelier avec toute une panoplie d'outils, une salle à manger et des cabines individuelles équipées d'un sac de couchage, d'une tablette et d'une chaise [...] Zvezda est un module de Service, rattaché à ISS. Il doit donc permettre le maintien de la station en orbite, par des corrections régulières d'altitude, et le contrôle du positionnement. Pour ce faire, à l'arrière du module se trouvent deux moteurs principaux de 3070N de poussée, plus 32 moteurs d'orientations répartis tout autour du cylindre. Des capteurs stellaires assurent le contrôle de l'attitude à 0°01' d'angle près. Tous ces moteurs sont alimentés par 700 kg d'ergols contenus dans 6 réservoirs.

A system of radio navigation in which an aircraft receives interrelated pulses transmitted from ground stations and determined its position by plotting the observed intervals between the pulses.

GEE used a series of transmitters sending out precisely timed signals, and the aircraft using GEE... examined the time of arrival on an oscilloscope at the navigator's station. If the signal from two stations arrived at the same time, the aircraft must be an equal distance from both transmitters, allowing the navigator to determine a line of position on his chart of all the positions at that distance from both stations. By making similar measurements with other stations, additional lines of position can be produced, leading to a fix.
